My husband and I had been researching, planning, and preparing for a home birth since before I was even pregnant. The prospect of laboring and birthing our baby from the comfort and safety of our own home was incredibly appealing to us, so we were both willing to put in the time and effort to make it a reality when the time came. Of course, a key factor in having a successful home birth is choosing the right midwife and birth team. As fate would have it, a friend of mine from high school had posted on Facebook about her redemptive birth experience- a vaginal home birth after two cesareans! I reached out to her, and she gave me the contact information, along with a glowing review, of her midwife, Sandy Pera.
Once I became pregnant, my husband and I had our first appointment with Sandy. Right away, we knew she would be a perfect fit for us! We were able to be completely honest with her about our wishes for my pregnancy care and birth, and Sandy respectfully provided us with information regarding our options when it came to certain tests, vaccinations, etc. It was a breath of relief to have a holistic midwife who truly cared for us and wouldn’t pressure us to do anything we didn’t want to do during the pregnancy or birth.
With Sandy’s support and expertise, the birth of my daughter was everything I hoped it would be and more. Sandy never rushed my labor and allowed me to trust my body and fully surrender to the experience within the comfort of my own home. She prayed over me right before I was ready to push and encouraged me through the toughest moments. I did not tear, and I partially attribute that to Sandy’s expert perineal massage during the pushing phase! After my daughter was born, Sandy and my birth team gave me and my baby the most blissful, healing herb bath and made up the bed so my husband and I could go rest and enjoy our new baby afterwards.
In the following days and weeks, Sandy would call to check in on me and ask how breastfeeding was going and give me some helpful advice and sweet words of encouragement. Sandy’s genuine love and care of me and my family made her feel more like family rather than just our midwife. You aren’t just another patient with Sandy—you are a very special person bringing a precious life into this world, and Sandy treats you as such.
Fast forward a little over a year to a miscarriage that Sandy guided me through, checked in on me during and afterward, and sent me a care package to ease the physical and emotional pain. And then fast forward almost another year after that to the joyful second home birth of our son! Through a start-and-stop labor, Sandy put me at ease. After giving me helpful tips to try to help baby to get into position, Sandy assured me that there was no rush, and urged me to just try to get some rest during the night. This simple assurance meant the world to me, especially knowing that many other providers would be antsy to speed things up in this type of situation. Surely enough, my son was born by the morning, with no unnecessary interventions!
Sandy has been there for me through some of the most happy, and most difficult times in my life. She holds a very special place in my heart and I would certainly recommend her to anyone who wants to experience a natural, supported, pregnancy and birth (and all that may fall in between). With Sandy, you are in skillful and loving hands.

"Sandy was our midwife for five of our babies. I was very thankful to have such an efficient and competent midwife. Sandy knew how to let us have our space and also when to check on us to make sure everything was progressing in good time.
On one of my births, when I was pushing out the baby, Sandy told me to stop pushing as the cord was around the baby's neck. With God's strength, I stopped pushing long enough for her to cut the cord so the baby could be born. Sandy then gave the baby oxygen.
